Well, we did it! Scout took the big leap into the conformation ring today. He showed in the 12-18 month old class and took first place as well as winning first place for winner’s dog. Best of Breed went to Curlew (CH Riverwatch Southern Cross) who is one of the highest ranked Curlies in the nation. It was an honor to be able to compete against him.
According to D. Caroline Coile in her book, “Show Me! A Dog-Showing Primer”, dog shows are the number one family participation sport in the country, and one of the oldest organized sports in America.
“Dog shows encourage good sportsmanship, provide a safe and enjoyable family pastime, encourage responsible dog ownership, preserve living history in the form of dog breeds, and help to improve the health of our pets,” says Ms. Coile.
We had a wonderful time at the show, and we would encourage anyone interested in dog sports to check out the American Kennel Club website at: http://www.akc.org or the United Kennel Club at: http://www.ukcdogs.com
While AKC and UKC conformation shows are limited to purebred dogs, those of mixed heritage can compete in dog sports like Rally, Obedience, Agility and more! Get out there and have some fun with your dog!
