Younger Demographics For Dog Ownership

We have noticed several indications that the age group of pet owners in the US is changing. Basically, younger couples are getting pets before (and sometimes instead of) children. According to the Pet Industry 2005 Strategic Outlook, “It is also widening the demographic of the buyer to reflect the fact that people are marrying later in life, having fewer children, if any, and are maintaining busy lives: a pet essentially replaces a child. So, while demand remains strong and growing among empty nesters and older people who increasingly seek pets as companions, a younger demographic has also emerged.” No longer are pets viewed as property, they are viewed as family members. Nice.
