Top 3 Benefits Of Playing With Your Dog

Posted on October 01, 2012 | 0 comments

Let's face it: after a long hard day at work, we often don't have a lot of energy left.

Feeding the dog, walking the dog and then making dinner are things that need to be done and by that point, we might be thinking about hitting the couch.

But wait! Playing with your dog should also be on your evening and weekend to-do list, and here's why:

It Keeps Your Pet Out of Trouble
Like humans, dogs need to blow off steam every once in awhile. It helps to keep their minds functioning at their peak and it beats the blahs. Dogs that are bored can become lethargic, or even worse, can start looking for things to get into. Playing with your dog helps your pet to interact with you and the environment in a positive way. A game of fetch, or chasing each other around the back yard is not just fun for your pet, it is good for them too.

The Interaction Creates Deeper Bonding
This one is obvious, and for pretty much the same reasons. Sure, you might be tired and want to watch an episode of Mad Men, but why not DVR that episode and play with your best friend instead. You'll be surprised at how much better you will feel when play time is over. In fact, you usually will feel a bit refreshed. The interaction with your dog makes the worries and drama of the day melt away. Once your pet is tired out, you can both settle in on the couch and fire up your favorite tv show. The interaction truly creates a better bonding between pet and "parent".

It Is Great Exercise For You & Your Pet
When you and your pet can run around a bit, it is obviously good exercise for you both. It may not be the equivalent of a half hour on a stair master but it sure beats sitting on the couch eating Fritos. Chasing tennis balls or your pet's favorite Dog Toy around the yard or dog park gets the blood flowing and when you do it regularly, it is a great way to knock off a few calories. An active dog (and dog owner) is always a good thing in the long run.

By playing with your dog on a regular basis you can keep your pet from getting bored, increase the bonding level between you and your pet and even work off a couple extra calories.

Sound good? Now who wants to play? Woof!

53% Of Dog Owners Travel With Their Pets

53% Of Dog Owners Travel With Their Pets

If you like traveling with your pet, you are not alone. In fact, according to a new survey commissioned by PetPlan Pet Insurance, 53% of all pet owners like to travel with their pet.

Some other interesting responses to the survey include:

• 44% are willing to spend up to $150 to travel with their pet
• 22% are willing to travel over 50 miles with their pet
• 54% have stayed at pet friendly hotels
• 6% are willing to spend on a souvenir for their pet
• 26% have traveled by airplane

Traveling with your dog can be a fun experience, enhancing the bond between pet and pet owner. It also brings a new perspective to your travel plans, often bringing you to locations that you did not previously consider. Finding dog parks in new places can be fun and meeting new friends (both human and canine) always enhances your experience too.

The PupLife pups are big dogs, and they are a bit fussy, so flying by airplane isn't really a convenient option. However, they love going on car trips out of state to visit relatives and have been on long vacations by car as well. Of course, when the PupLife dogs travel, they need to have all of their favorite dog toys, and are always outfitted with the proper dog collars, tags and safety gear.

Do you travel with your pet or take your dog with you on vacation? Let us know your travel stories - we'd love to hear them!

TV For Dogs? Believe It!

Posted on August 01, 2012 | 2 comments

At PupLife we are always searching for cool new trends in the pet industry. One of the neatest ideas we have heard in a long time is DOGTV.

As its name suggests, DOGTV is television designed exclusively for dogs.  Its producers spent hundreds of hours to create content that caters to a dog’s well being and unique sense of sight, hearing and movement detection. Everything from the visuals – the scenery, scenarios, color palettes and camera angles – to the audio soundtracks were selected with a dog’s experience in mind.

We also like the fact that DOGTV is created with the dog's well being first in mind. DOGTV programming is organized into relaxation, stimulation and exposure segments that provide just the right balance for the daily cycle of "stay-at-home" pups. “Animals need visual and auditory simulation throughout the day. DOGTV presents a breakthrough with programming that is created specifically for dogs,” said Dr. Nicholas H. Dodman, BVMS, MRCVS, a veterinarian specializing in animal behavior. “It will help millions of dogs that are left home alone every day and also help pet parents who don’t have the luxury of taking their dog with them to work or paying for doggy daycare.”

Currently, DOGTV is only offered on TV in the San Diego test market. However, it’s available as a streaming online channel that can be accessed by any pet lover in the world. Plus, our friends at DOGTV have created a special offer just for PupLife readers. When you use the special promotion code PUPLIFE50 you'll receive 50 percent off the online streaming price for the first month.

To sign up for DOGTV online streaming or for more information, please visit the DOGTV Web Site or like DogTV On Facebook. Have your dog check it out and let us know what you think!

Celebrating Sled Dogs

Celebrating Sled Dogs - NPR article on Dallas Seavey

Dallas Seavey may not be a household name but he has certainly made a splash (or a whoosh!) in the dog community. The 25 year old Alaskan native is the youngest winner of the Iditarod in the race's 40 year history.

Seavey hails from a family of sled dog racers and his passion for racing, and more importantly for dogs, is evident. In a recent interview with NPR, Seavey explained to reporter, Neal Conan, what (and who) drives him.

"Guinness is turning 9 years old, and she has raced in every major race that I have competed in. And she's been my lead dog in almost every one of them. .. [W]hat really inspires me about Guinness is just her enthusiasm. Not just for mushing, but for life, you know, in every aspect. And every time it's time to go, she is barking and screaming her head off, lunging against the line. She is the smallest dog in my team, but she's got the biggest heart."

Speaking about his other lead dog, Diesel, Seavey says, "Now, Diesel, he is younger. He's only 5 years old, and he's actually the largest dog in my team. And he is really just becoming that superstar leader. He has the athletic talent to be the best dog in the world. ... But ... he's not overly confident, and that's something we've been developing and working on for many years."

Seavey's love and admiration for his canine teammates is evident. Whether addressing issues like proper nutrition for sled dogs or his training regimen, it is clear that Seavey has thought through the issues in a manner well beyond what his years might suggest.

Dogs In The Workplace

Posted on February 20, 2012 | 1 comment

As animal lovers, we all know the value our pets bring to our lives. It turns out more and more employers are recognizing those benefits and allowing pets in the workplace.

According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturing Association (APPMA), over 50 million respondents believe that having pets in the workplace creates a more productive environment, improves interpersonal relationships and leads to more creativity.

Tips for creating a dog and human friendly workplace
  • Keep dogs on a leash, unless they are in the employee's office or cubicle. Not everyone loves puppy kisses. Co-workers who want to pet your dog will likely come to you.
  • Use a baby gate to prevent a dog from leaving your office unsupervised. Try to give the dog space to roam in your office.
  • Certain areas such as bathrooms or dining halls should be designated as dog-free.
  • Have a backup plan for taking the dog home if it isn't comfortable in the work environment.

Scout's Portrait By Artist Brooklyn Lamb

Posted on January 26, 2012 | 0 comments

We are big admirers of artist Brooklyn Lamb. Brooklyn specializes in original paintings and stylized illustrations. Brooklyn has been doing some pet portraits lately, so we jumped at the opportunity to commision a portrait of Scout (PupLife's Chief Creative Officer). Just check out Brooklyn's wonderful portrait of our Scoutie!

We find Brooklyn Lamb's style to be original, playful, and slightly mysterious. Just like Scout! On her site, she says "I love finding the difference in people's expressions through paint. To me, a painting is much deeper than a photograph could ever delve. It's much more raw, with more than just feeling and emotion, but a layer of mystery that the beholder has to shape together to get the sense of it. It is a journey for me that continues to create both excitement and fear."

We recently sat down with Brooklyn for a short question and answer session about her wonderful painting style.

How long have you been painting?
Since I was 16, so 10 years now.  It was a dream I had to be a painter since I was little. Gradually I've gotten the nerve to try. Still have a ways to go.

What drew you to pet portraits?
Who doesn't like portraits of their pets? I love animals, they are just like little kids.  Each has it's own personality and it's fun trying to express that.

How would you describe your style?
I'm really not sure.  A lot of times in my mind I want a painting to turn out a certain way, and my hand just does whatever it wants.  I'm usually drawn to big brush strokes and color, so I try to incorporate that into my work.

Do you approach painting pets from a different perspective?
I feel a little more free than when I paint people.  Pets aren't really sensitive if their hair looks extra crazy or their nose is too big.

Tell us about this portrait of Scout. It is adorable!
I am so glad you like it!  It was the first dog of it's breed that I've done.  The curly hair is cute.

If someone would like a portrait commissioned, how should they contact you?
