Scottish Deerhound Wins 2011 Westminster

Congratulations to Hickory, the Best In Show Winner at Westminster Kennel Club's 2011 Dog Show last night.

Hickory, (official name GCH Foxcliffe Hickory Wind) is an adorable Scottish Deerhound. She trotted the ring with confidence and grace. We were super pleased to see her take the trophy. She seems like a big sweetheart!

However, as this excellent New York Times article points out, Familiar Breeds Get Little Respect at Westminster. In fact, America's most owned dog breed, the Labrador Retriever, has never won Westminster. The Golden Retriever has also never won Best In Show. Where is the love for America's favorite big dogs?

To be fair, 2008's victory by Uno the Beagle was a wonderful nod to one of America's favorite pets. The German Shepherd and the Pug have at least one victory in the show's 135 year history. But for us Labrador and Golden fans, I guess we'll just have to wait!
