Dog Halloween Costume Contest: Yoda Newman

Posted on October 26, 2012 | 0 comments

Here is a picture of Newman aka Yoda Newman. I got him from a shelter when he was 8 months old. Thank God he was not abused. He belonged to an older lady who was told he was a Cockapoo. By the time he reached 60 pounds and a broken hip later, she knew she couldn’t keep him. It was very hard for her to give him up, but he was too strong for her. We’re still not sure what mixed breed he is, but I don’t care, I love him with all my heart. Newman lives to chase a ball and he can’t get enough of someone throwing it to him. He just turned 9 September 15 and this is his first time in a costume. As you can see, he’s not too thrilled with wearing it...lol. The costume was intended for my son and his girlfriends’ dog, Tommy who is an Italian Greyhound mix. The costume was too big for Tommy and to Newmans great delight (add sarcasm) it fit him. To me and my kids, Newman is the best dog ever and we all love him very much. I hope you got a laugh from his picture because every time I look at it, I can’t help but laugh.

Dog Halloween Costume Contest: Holly As Little Red Riding Hood

Posted on October 26, 2012 | 52 comments

Our dog's name is Holly.  We adopted her from Animal Friends, a no kill shelter in Pittsburgh, about 8 years ago.  As far as they can tell she is a Gordon Setter/Shephard Mix.  Since then she has pretty much become our "little girl."  :)  She is a very calm and loving dog.  Every night when I come home she greets me with one of her babies in her mouth (a stuffed animal), and wags her tail like it's been forever since she's seen me and she missed me SO MUCH!  :)

She has a fear of other dogs, but we try to take her to a few events throughout the year to get her a little more comfortable around other dogs.  She loves, loves, loves people, and loves the attention she gets.  We decided to dress this year in a theme, but we weren't sure what exactly until we saw a costume of Little Red Riding Hood, and that got our heads spinning.    So we ended up with Little Red Riding Hood, with Grandma and the Big Bad Wolf.

Thanks for your time, and we hope to hear from you soon!!

Happy Halloween!!  :)

Dog Halloween Costume Contest: Kolla

Posted on October 25, 2012 | 0 comments

My submission is of my pup Kolla.  Kolla is a very unique rescue dog – she is a 35 pound Peruvian Hairless (Peruvian Inca Orchid) who is actually from Peru!

She was left at a rescue in San Francisco… I had been searching on a dog adoption website for a long time to find a hairless rescue pup.  I have had asthma all my life and could never have an indoor pet.  When I heard there were hairless pups that come up for adoption from time to time, I knew it was my opportunity.  When I found Kolla, I knew she was my heart and soul.  Kolla was brought from Peru, bred in her first heat and was abandoned at a shelter about two months before she had her pups.  After her pups were weaned and homed, Kolla was mine!

We flew her directly from San Francisco to Cincinnati, Ohio where we picked her up at 5:30 in the cargo depot of the airport one really cold October morning.  It took us nearly an hour to get her out of her travel crate… but there she was!!  We went straight to a pet store to grab some staples for her before  bringing her home.  On the way out, it was snowing, but she recognized our car out of an entire parking lot!  She knew she was home.  After driving 3 hours back to Columbus, we had her between us on the couch… I’m not sure who was snoring louder – Kolla or my fiancé.

Kolla loves to dress up.  She prances and gets so excited when she sees clothes in our hands – she thinks even our clothes are for her!  She’ll go anywhere and loves car trips.  In this picture, we took her pumpkin picking at a local U-pick farm.  Kolla picked out this lovely, giant green pumpkin even though it was bigger than her!  Everyone loved seeing her follow her dad through the field back to the car carrying that ‘great pumpkin.’  The pumpkin weighs about 50 pounds – so little 35 pound Kolla was shocked to find a gourd bigger than her!

Kolla is my side-kick, my heart and my joy.  I’m not sure who rescued whom.  We are blessed to have her in our lives.
