Canine Influenza

Posted on February 16, 2012 | 0 comments

Just like people, dogs are at risk of developing the flu. Canine flu virus is a growing problem throughout the US because of increased interaction between individual dogs and among shelter dog populations. Canine flu virus spreads through airborne particles and contaminated surfaces. Symptoms of canine flu vary but may include fever, runny nose and cough. A percentage of infected dogs will not exhibit any symptoms and a small percentage of canine flu sufferers will go on to develop pneumonia.

Petfinder.com Foundation and Merck, manufacturer of the canine flu vaccine, recently teamed up to provide free flu vaccine to 1400 animal shelters as part of a new initiative, Building Community Immunity. If your dog comes in frequent contact with other dogs through dog day care, training, boarding or other interaction, you may want to talk with your vet about the pros and cons of canine flu vaccine. If you are adopting a pet from your local shelter, be sure to talk with your adoption supervisor about recent flu outbreaks so that you are able to provide the very best care and support for your new family member as well as existing ones.

You can help prevent the spread of canine flu virus (any many other diseases) by disinfecting surfaces frequently and managing your dog's health closely. If you suspect that your dog has the flu, contact your veterinarian immediately and keep your pet away from other dogs until he or she has recovered.

You Ate What?

Posted on February 07, 2012 | 0 comments
That's a question that most pet parents have asked at least once in their lives! But, did you know that pet owners spent nearly $5.2 million dollars on treatments for the removal of foreign objects from their pets' digestive tracts in 2011?

This is NOT a meal!

Veterinary Pet Insurance Company (VPI) reported that it processed 6500 claims for the removal of foreign objects last year alone. This kind of life-saving surgery can cost anywhere from $1400-$1900. That can't be easy to swallow. But, it's a great incentive to pet-proof your home by making sure that tantalizing items are kept well out of your dog's (or cat's) reach.

Here's a list of just some of the items dogs and cats ingested last year based on VPI's report:

Rocks
Hair Bands
Pine Cones
Candles
Baby Bottle Nipples
Dental Floss
Scrub Brushes
Artificial Finger Nails
Golf Balls
Batteries
Glue
Dental Retainers
Pillow Cases
A Dead Porcupine
Soap
Wedding Rings
Aluminum Cans

*We are happy to note that the dogs and cats implicated in this report were successfully treated and made full recoveries.

Scout's Portrait By Artist Brooklyn Lamb

Posted on January 26, 2012 | 0 comments

We are big admirers of artist Brooklyn Lamb. Brooklyn specializes in original paintings and stylized illustrations. Brooklyn has been doing some pet portraits lately, so we jumped at the opportunity to commision a portrait of Scout (PupLife's Chief Creative Officer). Just check out Brooklyn's wonderful portrait of our Scoutie!

We find Brooklyn Lamb's style to be original, playful, and slightly mysterious. Just like Scout! On her site, she says "I love finding the difference in people's expressions through paint. To me, a painting is much deeper than a photograph could ever delve. It's much more raw, with more than just feeling and emotion, but a layer of mystery that the beholder has to shape together to get the sense of it. It is a journey for me that continues to create both excitement and fear."

We recently sat down with Brooklyn for a short question and answer session about her wonderful painting style.

How long have you been painting?
Since I was 16, so 10 years now.  It was a dream I had to be a painter since I was little. Gradually I've gotten the nerve to try. Still have a ways to go.

What drew you to pet portraits?
Who doesn't like portraits of their pets? I love animals, they are just like little kids.  Each has it's own personality and it's fun trying to express that.

How would you describe your style?
I'm really not sure.  A lot of times in my mind I want a painting to turn out a certain way, and my hand just does whatever it wants.  I'm usually drawn to big brush strokes and color, so I try to incorporate that into my work.

Do you approach painting pets from a different perspective?
I feel a little more free than when I paint people.  Pets aren't really sensitive if their hair looks extra crazy or their nose is too big.

Tell us about this portrait of Scout. It is adorable!
I am so glad you like it!  It was the first dog of it's breed that I've done.  The curly hair is cute.

If someone would like a portrait commissioned, how should they contact you?

Halloween Photo Contest Entry: Millie The Exterminator

Posted on November 01, 2011 | 0 comments

Here is Millie the Exterminator.  This is her homage to Billy the Exterminator of A&E fame.  Since she's a beagle mix and wants to eat everything that comes through our yard--possum, raccoon, mouse, shrew, whatever, this costume seems appropriate for her.  She's a three year old rescued dog we adopted last year, and she's about three years old.  I just hope Billy won't be jealous since she is cuter in this costume than he is.
