Amazingly, Texas had the three top “pet travel friendly” cities in Houston, San Antonio and Austin. This is different from the most pet friendly city list (Chicago came out on top there). Here is the official list, courtesy of AAA.
1. Houston (108)
2. San Antonio (98)
3. Austin, Texas (72)
4. Albuquerque, N.M. (66)
5. Phoenix (64)
6. Dallas (62)
7. New York (62)
8. Orlando (57)
9. Nashville, Tenn. (50)
10. Tucson, Ariz. (43)
According to the article, the list “rated cities on the number of pet-friendly hotels, campgrounds and parks, as well as the number of animal hospitals.” Chicago’s a great city to own a pet, but unfortunately, it did not crack the top ten for being friendly to pet travelers. Fennville is great for farmers (and dogs that like room to roam) but there’s only animal hospital (although it is a great one).
We love traveling with our dogs, but honestly, sometimes we are so busy that we just don’t get to vacation as much as we would like. However, now that we know which cities are the most pet travel friendly, we’ve got some excellent cities to choose from! Nashville? Always wanted to go there!
Before we forget, here’s another interesting quote from the Tribune article:
“Since 1999, the number of pet-friendly hotels has grown 28 percent, according to AAA. The Travel Industry Association estimates that 29 million travelers took a pet with them on vacation sometime during the past three years.” Amazing. We always hear about how pets are becoming a more integral part of our families, but I think that those stats really prove it. C’mon, Fido! Let’s hit the road!
