More and more Americans are choosing organic products to improve the health, well-being and quality of life for themselves and the planet. According to Pet Product News, Americans will spend more than $30 billion on organic and natural products this year alone. Widespread demand for organic products has led to a plethora of choices for conscientious consumers and their pets.
We are exposed to a barrage of chemical toxins on a daily basis. These chemicals are found in our food, air, water, body care products, cleaning products and more. Consequently, many people and pets are facing a toxic overload.
Choosing organic products over those produced conventionally help lessen this toxic load. From food and supplements to natural bedding, organic products offer a healthy and natural alternative for pets.
One new trend we here at PupLife.com particularly love is the use of organic textiles in pet products. We recently spoke with Lisa Hill Saghini about her new line of Bella Dogga Organic Dog Beds.
PupLife.com: Hi Lisa. Please tell us about Bella Dogga. How and why did you start the company?
Lisa Hill Saghini: There’s a well-known quote that says, ‘He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.’ Anyone who has ever loved a dog knows the truth of that quote. Bella Dogga emerged from my own attempt to make myself worthy of my dog’s devotion.
PupLife.com: How would you summarize your business philosophy?
Lisa Hill Saghini: Our dogs are our best friends, constant and unconditional in their love and companionship…how do you even approach repaying that kind of devotion? We believe you do it by giving your dog something your dog wants for herself. She spends most of her life sleeping. As we say on our website, why not indulge her desire to sleep in heavenly peace with a soft place to flop.
PupLife.com: Many people associate organic products with food and grocery items. Please tell us about the organic “ingredients” you utilize in the construction of Bella Dogga Beds.
Lisa Hill Saghini: We knew your dog would spend a lot of time “flopping” on this bed, so it was important to consider what would fill it. It became our mission to find a nontoxic, chemical free, environmentally friendly alternative to commonly used fiberfill that would also provide a super soft down like feel.
Since we, at Bella Dogga, love animals of all kinds, it was also important that no duck sacrifice it’s life for the sake of a pillow. All of our dog beds are stuffed with all natural, organic kapok fiber. The “cotton” of the Kapok Tree is a sustainable rainforest crop that comes from the renewable source of its seeds. It is hygienic, hypoallergenic, odorless and breathable. As a result of being naturally resistant to mold and decay, no pesticides are used in its production. It is a hardy tree that thrives in poor soil conditions and its harvesting provides a source of income for indigenous people.
As an added bonus, since the tree is considered sacred in many countries, it is said that sleeping on kapok will bring good luck and sweet dreams! We had found our stuffing! We also offer a bed (the Crash Pad Dog Bed) that is made with organic cotton fabric.
PupLife.com: Why is it important for dog owners to incorporate organic products into their lifestyles?
Lisa Hill Saghini: I think we all have an obligation to be responsible stewards of what we’ve been given… whether that’s your dog’s devotion or the cleanliness of our environment… and that obligation can be met by thinking consciously and making choices that solve problems rather cause them.
PupLife.com: What’s next for Bella Dogga?
Lisa Hill Saghini: We will be adding more beds made with organic cotton fabric. In addition, our resident industrial designer is working on a dog house that will be available in the very near future. It will be a whimsical take on a traditional style. What that means… I guess you’ll have to wait to see, but I can tell you this…your dog will love it!
PupLife.com: Thanks for taking the time to talk with us. We look forward to more fantastic organic products from Bella Dogga!
