Dog parks are popping up all over the country, and honestly, it makes sense. More people have dogs, more cities are listening, and more green space is being set aside for off-leash play. For a lot of dog owners, especially in urban areas, the dog park is the only place where their pup can really run.
And that part is great. No leash, no traffic, room to stretch out and be a dog. You can toss a toy, let them burn off energy, and get a little fresh air yourself. We get the appeal.
But here's the honest truth: not every dog park is a good experience, and not every dog there is friendly. Some of the trainers we respect most advise their clients to avoid dog parks entirely, particularly in cities. One trainer we know calls them "bumper cars for dogs." The concern is that your dog can pick up bad behaviors from other dogs without you even realizing it, and in a crowded, chaotic park, things can escalate quickly.
A park ranger in Boulder put it well: "It can be very intimidating. It's a great idea. It works out great for exercise and sociability. But I think it's turned into a free-for-all."
So are dog parks safe? Our honest answer is: it depends.
It depends on the park. It depends on the dogs and owners who show up. And it depends a lot on when you go. We skip busy urban parks, but we do visit a few parks out in the country where there's enough space that if two dogs have a disagreement, there's room to separate them. We also stick to low-traffic times. A Tuesday morning is a very different experience than a Thursday evening when every dog owner in town has just gotten home from work.
If you do your homework before bringing your dog, the odds go up considerably. Visit the park without your dog first. Is it clean? Are the dogs paying attention to their owners? Is there enough space? If it feels like a free-for-all, keep looking.
When you do go, make sure your dog is wearing a proper dog collar and a dog ID tag just in case. And then, if everything checks out, let them have some fun. That's the whole point.
